Boosting Oracy: How Mandarin Helps Young Learners Find Their Voice

In today’s busy classrooms, developing strong communication skills is more important than ever. For nursery managers and primary teachers, the goal is often the same: helping children become confident, clear, and empathetic communicators.

While learning Mandarin Chinese might seem like a big step, it is actually one of the most effective tools for building these vital "oracy" skills. Because Mandarin is a tonal language, it encourages children to listen with more focus and speak with more intention.

In Mandarin, the same sound can have different meanings depending on the tone used.  This unique feature turns every lesson into a fun game of "active listening." 

For children aged 2 to 5, this helps them distinguish between sounds and improves their overall attention span.  In our nursery classes, we often see children becoming more attuned to the sounds around them, which directly supports the Communication and Language goals of the EYFS. 

Practical ideas for your classroom

You don’t need to be a fluent speaker to bring Mandarin into your setting. Here are three simple ways to support oracy and confidence:

• Story-led adventures: Use familiar stories, like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but introduce the Mandarin names for the fruit.  Using puppets and props helps children link the new sounds to physical objects. 

• The "Musical Tones" game: Play different Mandarin tones or songs and ask the children to move their bodies to the "pitch" of the word—stretching high for high tones and crouching low for lower ones.

• Routine greetings: Incorporate "Nǐ hǎo" (Hello) and "Xièxiè" (Thank you) into your morning registration or snack time. This builds a sense of belonging and cultural awareness.
