Hopping into Spring: Fun Easter Mandarin Activities for Your Classroom

As the days get longer and the flowers begin to bloom, Easter offers a wonderful opportunity to bring fresh, seasonal energy into your setting. For nursery managers and primary teachers, integrating a new language during festive periods is a fantastic way to boost engagement and meet EYFS and Key Stage 1 communication goals.

At MANDO SCHOOL, we believe that language learning is most effective when it is tied to play, stories, and the world around us. Here are some simple, practical ways to introduce a touch of Mandarin to your Easter celebrations this year.

Easter Vocabulary for Little Learners

You don't need to be a fluent speaker to start using Mandarin in your classroom. Begin with these three high-frequency words that fit perfectly with your Easter displays and activities:

  •  Rabbit: Tùzi (Too-dze)

  •  Egg: Dàn (Dan)

  • Happy Easter: Fùhuó jié kuàilè (Foo-hwor jyeh kwai-ler)

Teacher Tip: Try using these words during your daily routines. When children are lining up or sitting for snack time, ask them if they can "hop like a tùzi" to their seats!

3 Fun Classroom Activities

1. The 'Tùzi' Hop and Hunt Instead of a traditional egg hunt, turn it into a language game. Hide colourful paper eggs around the room or outdoor area. As children find them, encourage them to shout "Dàn!" (egg). You can also hide a "Golden Rabbit" and the child who finds it can lead the class in a celebratory "Tùzi" dance.

2. Sensory 'Cǎidàn' Decorating In Mandarin, Easter eggs are often called cǎidàn (coloured eggs).  Set up a station with playdough, biodegradable glitter, and paints. As the children decorate, talk about the different colours in Mandarin. This hands-on approach supports fine motor skills and helps vocabulary "stick" through multisensory play.

3. Story-Led Adventures At MANDO SCHOOL, we use story-led adventures to bring Mandarin to life.  You can adapt your favourite spring stories by swapping in the Mandarin names for the animal characters. Using puppets or props helps children make an immediate emotional connection to the new sounds.

Why Introduce Mandarin at Easter?

Introducing a second language in the early years does more than just teach new words. It supports:

  • Listening Skills: Children become more attuned to different tones and sounds.

  • Cultural Awareness: It opens a window into how different communities celebrate spring and new beginnings.

  • Confidence: Learning a "special" word for a favourite holiday gives children a great sense of achievement.

"Our children were so excited to learn the word for rabbit in Mandarin. It made our Easter parade feel even more global and inclusive." — Nursery Manager, South London
