Meet Your Teacher: Wenqi Yu 老师 lǎo shī

My first experience working with children was as a Mandarin performance teacher, training them for TV and event presenting. Throughout that journey, I discovered how rewarding it is to work with young learners. I still remember the joy of watching them perform and host on stage for the very first time and witnessing their passion for Mandarin grow overtime. After a full year of working together, one pupil gave me a drawing of a beautiful sea view, along with a handwritten message in Mandarin thanking me for my guidance. That heartfelt gesture remains one of my most touching and memorable moments as a teacher, it reaffirmed my decision to teach and deepened my passion for helping children learn.
If I could describe my teaching style in three words, they would be: engaging, structured, and fun. I use the PPP approach—Presentation, Practice, and Performance—supported by stories, games, prompts, and movement, to make Mandarin both accessible and enjoyable for young learners. My favourite part of working with children is seeing their confidence blossom as they learn to express themselves. I hope every child leaves my lessons feeling proud of their progress, enriched with Mandarin skills, a broader cultural perspective, and the confidence to share their voice.
