Meet The Team: Yaming 雅铭

Hi! My name is Yaming (雅铭). I am a native Chinese and was born in Wuhan, Hubei province. I am currently live in London to pursue my master’s degree at King’s College London. Since my major is Language and Cultural Diversity, I always immerse myself in different cultures and be ready to learn more about them.

This year, I took a part-time job as a mandarin teacher on Italki (a language learning platform). I taught Mandarin to foreign students (aged 10) and improved their oral mandarin speaking. I quite enjoy doing volunteer work. In the summer of 2018, I obtained an opportunity to be a volunteer teaching assistant in Sri Lanka. Traveling abroad alone for the first time was not an easy task. But the one-month teaching experience in a pre-school had endowed me insights into a holistic view of teaching Mandarin as a second language. In the beginning, my teaching process went not as smoothly as expected due to the students’ knowledge gap, language barrier, and shyness. With a challenging spirit, I immediately adjusted my teaching plan to the new situation. I taught children some simple Chinese songs and played word games with them. It was gratifying to see that the kids could remember and use each word quickly.

I also love traveling and have been to many places such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. And I have a fancy for culinary art (like making all kinds of food and experiment with all forms of combination), especially pastry, which is my favorite food.
