Meet The Team: Yan 黄燕钏

meet the team Nov 05, 2021

Hi, my name is Yan Chuan Ng 黄燕钏 and I grew up in a small town in Penang, Malaysia. I am a native Mandarin speaker. At the same time, I am fluent in English and Malay, and have a good command of Cantonese and Hokkien. My multilingual ability allows me to grasp and appreciate the subtleties of communication and work closely with people from all walks of life. I enjoy working with children and have had the experience of teaching children in rural villages in Malaysia and India during my gap year. Despite the limited resources and language barrier, I taught creatively and often used songs and interactive games to engage with the children. Watching the children make progress and become enthusiastic about learning is one of the most rewarding things about teaching.

I studied law at the University of Cambridge before pursuing my masters at the London School of Economics and Political Science. As an avid Mandarin debater, I was the president of the Cambridge University Chinese Debating Club and led my team to win the 7th UK National Chinese Debate Tournament after a three-day competition. I also enjoy mooting where I participate in simulated court hearings, analyse a legal problem, conduct research on the relevant law, prepare written submissions and present oral arguments. I have represented my universities at domestic and international moot court competitions, winning three competitions and being named the best mooter in one. My experience in debating and mooting has equipped me with excellent communication skills and the ability to think on my feet. This will ensure that I handle my classes competently and deal with all situations effectively.

I enjoy an active lifestyle through yoga and ballet. I have been practising yoga for ten years and have benefited from having a clear mind and calm composure. I started ballet as an adult and have recently achieved the Advanced Foundation level. As a form of both art and sport, ballet is physically and mentally demanding. Learning it as an adult has equipped me with self-discipline, openness to feedback, and motivation to succeed.
