A free taste of our KS1 Mandarin scheme of work
Thinking about Mandarin for your infant classes, or wondering how it would work in practice? This free sample gives you four story-led lessons from our KS1 programme for children aged 5 to 7, taken from the same plans our teachers use in schools.
What's in the sample
- Lesson 1: greetings, with 你好 (nǐ hǎo) and 再见 (zàijiàn)
- Lessons 4 and 5: family words, taught through two stories
- Lesson 9: numbers 6 to 10
- Lesson plans showing how each lesson flows
- Matching activity sheets, ready to print
How a KS1 lesson is shaped
Young children learn best through play, so every KS1 lesson is built around a short story, songs, movement and games. The same words come back as a picture, an action and part of the story.
| Introduction | Greetings and a hello song |
| Vocabulary | New words taught one at a time, with children repeating each one |
| Story time | A short Mandarin story with actions, so children use the new words in context |
| Games | Songs and movement games that practise the words |
| Dance and break | A dance, then a calm song so children can rest and listen |
| Activity sheet | Matching, circling and drawing to reinforce the words |
| Goodbye | A goodbye song and zàijiàn |
Who it is for
MFL leads, headteachers and class teachers who want to see what Mandarin could look like in Year 1 and Year 2 before deciding. You do not need to speak any Mandarin to follow it.
